Factors to Consider If You Want to Become a Lawyer

Factors to Consider If You Want to Become a Lawyer Have you ever watched “Law Order” or “Suits”? If your answer is yes, then you have probably wondered how your life would be if you were one of the characters from those TV shows.Almost every one of us who have done that imagined ourselves in a courtroom full of people, with Judge in front of us and Jury on the side, trying to convince them in our client’s innocence.Ah, those were fun days! And then we would think: “Hey, I want to be a lawyer, it is such an amazing profession.”Wearing suits, putting criminals behind bars and earn a lot of money. It all sounded like a dream job for a lot of people.Of course, not everything is as shiny as it seems.Being a lawyer is not a catwalk, there are a lot of factors to consider, from expensive education to not always being a hero.Sometimes lawyers get to defend criminals, rob poor people of their savings and a lot more.It is just a part of the job, and that is why being a lawyer is not a profession fit for everyone. That said, in thi s article, we will mention several factors which you should consider if you want to become a lawyer. So stay with us if you are interested in this topic!LONG AND EXPENSIVE EDUCATIONNow, before you become a successful lawyer and start earning a lot of money, you need to complete a very extensive and expensive education process.Everyone knows that Law is one of the most boring subjects to study unless you are really in love with it.There are a lot of unnecessary topics to learn and it can often be very tough to learn everything by heart. Now if you are still interested in pursuing a career as a lawyer, then you should keep these next few steps in mind.1. Bachelor’s DegreeIn order for you to even apply to join any law school, first, you will need to earn a bachelor’s degree. You might ask what is the most suitable field to get your bachelor’s degree if you want to continue with education in Law?And the right answer is that there is none. Some studies show that students get accepted t o law schools from almost all fields of study, but that most are coming from schools related to political science, philosophy, journalism, and economics. So it really doesn’t matter that much. What matters is your determination and performance at LSAT, which we will go over in a second.2. LSATBefore you apply for a law school, you need to pass the Law School Admission Test, or in other words, LSAT.LSAT is one of the most important factors included in the law school application process. It is used to asses the person and to help people who need to decide whether to accept you or not, by testing the applicants, by testing their various skills, which could be needed for the job.The test itself is divided into several parts, with both open and closed types of questions. There are five questions where you are offered with multiple choices as well.3. Choosing Right Law SchoolWhen choosing a law school, you need to consider a lot of factors, such as location, fees, accommodation, and popular ity.But there is also one crucial factor that you must consider, which is law school accreditation. That means you should choose only those law schools who are generally accredited by specific institutions, like the American Bar Association for example.Only law schools with proper accreditation are worthy and generally recognized, which gives you the best chance of getting a good job after you complete your education. There are a lot of law schools to choose from, but if your aim is to become the best of the best, you should try to enter some of the most prestigious law schools. In order to get into desired schools, both your previous grades and LSAT results will be considered, so that is why we mentioned how important LSAT is and why you should try to prepare yourself as best as possible for the test.4. Juris Doctor DegreeNow that you have successfully applied and been accepted to the desired law school, the next logical step is getting your Juris Doctor degree or in short JD.It is a three-year program, which allows you to specialize in a desired field of the law. This is where you need to decide what you really want with your life.Being a corporate lawyer and lawyer in other areas, like crime and family lawyer are completely different things. This also depends on your previous education. If you have been studying economics, it would probably be easier for you to become a corporate lawyer. On the other hand, if you have been studying in some other field, then other types of lawyers might be more suitable professions for you.Everything really depends on what you really want to do, what would you like to do and what are you prepared to do, so choose wisely.5. Bar ExaminationYou would probably think that after getting a JD, your education process would be over and you would be able to start doing your job as a lawyer. But that is where you are wrong. There are still few more obstacles to cross. After completing all of the above, there is still one more left to do and tha t is passing the Bar Examination, which is the final test you need to pass in order to become a lawyer. In order for you to work as a lawyer in a specific state in the USA, first, you need to pass the State Bar Examination. It contains two parts.First, the applicant must pass a test formed of various law-related questions.Apart from that, the applicant needs to solve a practical legal problem.Something like solving a case study, if you want a simpler explanation. After you pass Bar Examination and prove yourself as a competent and reliable person who can be trusted with a serious matter and who can make some difficult choices, you are ready to become a lawyer. Most young lawyers first join some firms and work as a junior associates, then after some time they either advance through the ranks or join another firm where they think they have a better chance of promotion, which means better and more interesting cases.Apart from that, some choose to pursue the career of a judge.6. Education ExpensesA large number of tests and years of study are not the only obstacle which young people who want to become lawyers have to cross on that path.Another very big issue can be the educational fees.In the USA, educational fees per year can get as high as $40.000 and in some cases can reach $60.000.With the information that average law student has a debt of around $140.000, you can get the bigger picture of how hard it must be for those young men and women and their parents, especially for those who do not come from wealthy families. That is why it is important for them to succeed in this endeavor and become lawyers because otherwise, it would be very hard to repay this vast debt. And even if they succeed, some may feel trapped in the circle with a job they thought they liked, but in fact, they don’t. And it can be very depressing. That is why it is important for you to be certain about your choice to pursue a career in the law. EARNINGSWhen it comes to the question of how much mon ey lawyers earn, the general opinion is that amount in question is very high.Yes, there are lawyers who earn millions and millions of dollars, but there are not so many of them, which is why the general opinion about lawyers’ salary is usually wrong.Statistics show that the average lawyer earns around $120.000 a year. Depending on a workplace, a lawyer’s salary can vary from very small to huge.Lawyers who work in small legal clinics generally earn much less money, because they tend to work with the general population, who, as we all know, is not among the richest upper class of residents. Also, legal clinics often take a lot more pro-bono cases, especially to help the people who don’t have the money to pay for legal counseling. On the other side, there are lawyers who work for big law firms. They tend to work on a lot more interesting cases, which can bring a lot of money, especially if we talk about corporate law. These lawyers tend to earn much more than their colleagues from le gal clinics.Another important factor when it comes to the salary is geographic location.Lawyers from big cities usually have more cases, thus, they often earn more money than lawyers who work in small towns.THE GENERAL OPINION OF LAWYERSFor generations, the lawyer profession has been considered as one of the most elite professions.Fancy suits, high salary and ability to help others were the most common causes for young people to decide to pursue a career in this field.Nowadays the general opinion of lawyers is still, more or less, the same. It is still considered a very prestigious profession by most of the people, but, of course, there are those who do not agree and have their own picture of a lawyer. So it is the only fair thing to mention their reasons as well since after all, you should consider both good and bad aspects of being a lawyer.Lawyers tend to be heroes to some people, yes, but it is often the case that something can go wrong, whether with the evidence or any other asp ect of the case.In that case, clients can feel like their lawyer let them down and they often blame them for losing the case, especially if it means that the client has to go to jail. There is also the situation when criminals go away unpunished for the crimes they had committed because they had such a good lawyer who managed to remove the guilt from their way.In these situations, lawyers are no longer viewed as heroes but as villains.Of course, not every lawyer accepts this kind of job, some have really high moral standards, but sometimes it is not a choice, especially if the money involved is high and as we had already said, most of the young lawyers tend to have financial struggles when they start their careers. So despite they are good people and have high moral standards, they often take that one case which would probably make them feel bad for themselves, but could potentially help them with paying their debts, because they feel there is no other way to do it.Of course, not ever ything is as dark as it might seem from these sentences.Lawyers do help people, especially those working in small legal clinics.People who do not have enough money to pay for fancy lawyers often get represented by lawyers who have a good heart and want to prove themselves and help people. They often accept those jobs for free or for a very small fee. That kind of case is called pro-bono cases, which are not just useful for clients, but also for a lawyer in question.Sometimes even the smallest pro-bono case could turn out to be a big deal and that is one of the ways for young lawyers to get some reputation and might earn a place in some bigger law firms.WHAT ARE THE SKILLS EVERY LAWYER SHOULD HAVE?Apart from lengthy education, there are some skills every lawyer should have.So it is not just about having a degree on paper.Let us see what skills define a good lawyer.1. Knowledge of LawThe first thing that defines a good lawyer is his knowledge of all current and past laws.Of course, it i s impossible to know literally every law that has ever existed, there are thousands of them. But it is very important to be aware of current actual laws, because it may help you find some loopholes, which could help you win the case in not so few occasions.2. ConfidenceThis is one of the most important traits of successful lawyers. It is not crucial just to be confident for yourself, but also for your clients.Remember, lawyers are sometimes the last hope for some people, so in order for them not to lose hope and continue to fight, lawyers have to be confident and to inspire their clients to keep on fighting if there is even a small chance of winning.Of course, sometimes it is better to make a consensus and accept the deal, but it still takes a confident lawyer who can persuade a stubborn client that accepting the deal is in his best interest.3. CommunicationWith confidence comes the ability to be able to properly communicate with both your client and the other people, like judge, jur y or simply the police.A lawyer with an excellent communication skill could possibly change the tide of the entire case, by convincing the jury in certain things. The way of presenting evidence can be crucial in most of the cases, so no matter you are defending or accusing someone, you need to have very developed oral skills in order for you to either positively validate evidence or manage to make it unusable by the court.4. PrecisionBeing a lawyer is one of those jobs where every little detail matters, so that is why you have to be precise and meticulous. You need to be careful what you write and say because even one misused word could either be turned against you or used in your own advantage if you are precise enough to find it.Every contract, formal e-mail or just a simple conversation between lawyers and clients must be carefully conducted. That is why it is important to have a plan before you jump to a case.Read everything related to it, find out all the facts and be aware of eve ry little detail, because if you could have found it, it means that your opponents can too.5. Time PlanningOne of the most difficult things to process as a lawyer is that it is a very time-consuming job.Perhaps it is not the case when you first start working, but after a while, cases will pile up, so you will need to work much longer hours. That is why it is crucial to plan your activities and organize your schedule to the best of your abilities, so you don’t get overrun by the amount of work.It is important not just to organize your work schedule, but you should also try to fit some side activities as well, in order for you not to get insane.Everyone needs to vent from time to time, so that is why having side activities matters a lot.Take a walk, have fun with your friends, go for a couple of drinks, enjoy yourself and every job will become much easier.6. Analytical SkillsAs previously mentioned, there are a lot of laws, and with that comes a large number of information which you will get from all sides. Some of the information may or may not be useful to both you and your clients, so that is why you, as a successful lawyer, need to be able to distinguish what is important and what is not.To be able to do it, you need to have excellent analytical skills. It is crucial to find the information you need for a certain case, because it may turn the tide in your favor and then, combined with the skills we previously mentioned, such as confidence and communication skill that can lead to you winning the case for your clients.7. Being Able to Work Under PressureBecause of all the previous things we had already mentioned, to work as a lawyer means being able to handle a lot of stuff simultaneously. That itself can cause a lot of stress and pressure.Hence, in order for you to be a lawyer, it is very important to be a stable person who can cope with all that pressure. There are a lot of deadlines and hard cases, which could sometimes be risky if you are dealing with the wr ong type of people. All of that brings a lot of pressure, so being a lawyer is not a job for fainthearted. You should never allow yourself to lose the grip, especially not in front of other people, because it could hurt your case and reputation. You should always be as calm and as confident as possible, so your clients could feel a lot safer when you are around. In order for you to get the feeling of what it takes to become a lawyer, look at this video made by Georgie Stevenson, who shared how her life as a law student and later law graduate was. FINAL WORDNow that we have come to the end of our presentation, you probably have a wider picture of what it takes to become a successful lawyer. Now you understand that it is not an easy process, in fact, it is very hard and requires a lot of hard work and persistence. But if you are in love with the subject, nothing is too hard to learn or work, because when you love what you do, you feel happy, even if it is a work like this, which adds a lot of pressure and is very time-consuming.So, even after reading all of this, you still want to become a lawyer, and then nothing should stop you on that path, because it means you do not quit so easily and being a fighter is what you are. Then go ahead and live your dream!

Julius Caesar Effective Leader - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 767 Downloads: 6 Date added: 2017/09/18 Category History Essay Type Argumentative essay Tags: Julius Caesar Essay Did you like this example? Many businessmen, historians, military personal, etc all have created lists of who they believe to be great leaders. One man appears on more than one of those list: Julius Caesar. He was truly an effective leader. An effective leader must be a communicator, a planner, confident, yet humble, knowledgeable, and much more. Caesar planned to get to the top of the political system in Rome. To do that, he would have to climb many steps to get there. In 80 B. C. E. , he joined the staff of the governor Asia. He was sent on a diplomatic mission to Nicomedes IV of Bithynia to raise a fleet. It was rumored that he had a love affair with Nicomedes, however that could have just been a rumor started by Caesar’s enemies. Years later, in 74 B. C. E. , Mithradates of Pontus attacked the Roman province of Asia and Caesar, wanting military glory, raised an army and went to Asia, which was illegal because you needed a commission from the Senate to lead an operation. He then defended s everal towns, allowing the Roman commander time to attack Pontus. Funding his quest on the political ladder, Caesar went bankrupt. The richest man in Rome, Crassus, paid Caesar’s debts. Crassus’s wealth would become the major fund behind Caesar’s extravagant lifestyle and the necessities to advance the political totem pole. When Caesar’s aunt Julia died, he decided to hold a large funeral for her. At the funeral , he made a long speech about Marius, who was married to Julia, and claimed descent from the fourth king of Rome and Venus. Soon after, he left for Spain where he began to quell an uprising among the local Spanish tribes. He proceeded to attack towns and the silver mine of Gallaecia. This Spanish War was where Caesar found he had a knack for military command. This war also taught him that war can be very profitable. It was here in Spain where he had a famous encounter with a statue of Alexander the Great. He proceeded to lament how he failed to perform some memorable act whereas Alexander ,at the age of 33, the same age Caesar was at this moment, conquered the whole known world. Caesar began forming an alliance with the Roman general Pompey the Great. Pompey fought wars in the east and the Senate was late in passing laws to organize the east. Caesar supported Pompey and would go on to form the First Triumvirate with Pompey and Crassus. The triumvirate was described by Livy as, â€Å"a conspiracy against the state by its three leading citizens†. Together they would rule Rome and all decisions would help all three members. In 58 B. C. E. , he became the governor of Cisalpine Gaul, Transalpine Gaul, and Illyricum. He originally wanted to conquer modern Romania, which was rich in metals, but saw the opportunity for conquest on glory in Gaul. He proceeded to conquer and subjugate the Gallic tribes. The conquest of Gaul meant that the Gauls could no longer attack Rome since in 387 B. C. E. , they ended up captur ing the city of Rome and the Romans began a lifelong hatred of Gauls. When Caesar had power he had to organize Rome to ensure it’s stability. Caesar organized an army and defended Asia from an attack by Pontus. This gave the commander of the Roman army time to raise an army and attack Pontus. After crushing rebellions in Spain and Gaul, Caesar organized the provinces to make them stable. Caesar was so successful in organizing Gaul, that the Gauls would consider themselves Roman and was considered the most Roman province outside of Italy. In order to advance up the political ladder, Caesar organized a coalition between himself, Crassus, and Pompey called the First Triumvirate. All three men agreed that every decision made would have to benefit all three members. After being elected consul, Caesar organized a law that would give Pompey’s soldiers and the poor land in Italy. This appeased the mob and alleviated unemployment. Next he passed bills that prevented corru ption by provincial governors. After the civil war he became dictator and organized Rome. He held triumphs which appeased the people of Rome. He encouraged education by granting doctors and teachers citizenship. He reformed the tax policy and reformed the calendar. Another of his reforms was to drains the marshes to create more land and granted full voting rights to those south of the Alps. Caesar often recruited effective workers and executives because to become the most powerful man in Rome, he had to create alliances with powerful men. Don’t waste time! Film and Tragic Love Story Free Essays

Last January 10, 2013, I, together with my English 211 classmates watched the Lantaw 2012 Short-film festival. It’s my first time to watch a short-film here in USM since Lantaw is a yearly activity here in our school. I was really excited to watch those 5 short-films, especially the film â€Å"Salamin† from Ateneo de Davao University, who got first place in a certain event. We will write a custom essay sample on Film and Tragic Love Story or any similar topic only for you Order Now I also enjoyed the 4 films, namely; Surat, Kulta, Ayuda, and Incognito. In the film â€Å"Surat†, produced and directed by the 2 BSECE-A, I was really surprised because my friend, April Mae Tulang, is the lady protagonist in the film. It was a tragic love story between a teacher and a rebel. It was a nice film and story, but for me the ending is a bit predictable one, the guy died and the teacher became an old maid. Let’s go to the film â€Å"Kulta†, from 2 ABPolSci. This film is a tragic-family story. The story was based from the reality today. In the film, they were orphans, but still a happy family. Not until when the youngest of them got sick, and she really needed to get in the hospital. Because of being penniless, the oldest son took the risk of being a bomb carrier in exchange of money. It was a reality-based film. It’s just, I can’t understand what were they’re saying because there’s no subtitle in the movie. While in â€Å"Ayuda†, from 3ABEnglish, is one of the short-films that I’ve been enjoyed watching. I enjoyed this film simply because we can related based from the story! It’s a college love story. The cast of the film played each of their roles nice and easy. But we were wondering about the ending of the film. It was totally fuzzy why the guy holds a mini-knife. Will he take suicide? Or will he kill the antagonist? It’s very confusing. And the film which I mostly liked, the â€Å"Incognito†, which is from DevChem (students from Development Communications and Chemistry department) really amazed me. The main cast were so amazing in performing their different roles. And the ending was really unpredictable! I did not imagine that pretty lady was †¦ gay. Haha. I am very happy for the people who made this short-film. They made it really great! I was really excited in the â€Å"Salamin† by the AdDU filmmakers because Sir Lloyd said that Salamin is a must-see short-film. And I really watching the film. At first, I never imagined that it/s going to be a horror movie. Their setting was nice, the actors especially the main characters delivered well. I was having fun even though some parts of the movie surprised me, it has a good sound effects and a loud and clear voice which I understand easily. Over-all, the Lantaw short-film Festival was a success. The audiences enjoyed those 5 films being watched. Thanks for the loud Sound System that we all heard the sounds loud and clear. Ellyn Mae L. Is Violence and conflict central to Romeo and Juliet Essay Example

Is Violence and conflict central to Romeo and Juliet? Essay What is in a name? A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, a quote clearly representing Juliets love and confusion, as during that time, Juliet was questioning her love for Romeo, and thereby portraying her inner conflict. Along with the plot twists this is what Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet is about. However, there is also a darker side to the story, and this is the large amount of conflict and violence. This essay will show that Romeo and Juliet does indeed, have a lot of violence in it. As well as examine the language used, discuss the way the play is written, and aim to conclude all the given ideas. In view of my argument, there are three major scenes before the last which incorporate violence into them, act one, scene one, act three, scene one, and act three, scene five, and the last scene, act five, scene three . In these scenes, there is an extreme amount of violence. It is through these scenes, that we will determine that Romeo and Juliet is indeed a violent play. Ay, while you live, draw your neck out o the collar, by Gregory saying this, it shows that he is willing to fight to the death. This signifies that violence, during the time period the Romeo and Juliet was written, was extremely important, as it was the only way that people could defend their honour was by fighting. Honour was extremely important for these men, as this was a vital way to become influential in the society. During the next thirty four lines, Gregory and Samson argue about what they will do to the men and the women of the Montague family. True; and therefore women, being the weaker vessels, are ever thrust to the wall: therefore I will push Montagues men from the wall, and thrust his maids to the wall. This quote means that Samson will take the lives of the Montague men, push Montagues men from the wall, and they will violate the women, thrust his maids to the wall. This quote has an extreme amount of violence in it, and so this also amplifies the fact that there was a very bitter rivalry between the Capulets and the Montagues. Without this conflict, there is no reason why Romeo could not marry Juliet. The next few lines introduce Abraham, Benvolio, and Tybalt, who then go on to start a fight. What, drawn, and talk of peace! I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee: Have at thee, coward! These lines are portrayed in an extremely violent and aggressive manner. They fight, This particular stage direction, shows that the men used violence in order to make themselves more intimidating, this does not just happen in this one instance, during the play, many men tend to act tough and violent in order to make themselves seem as if they have more authority, such as when Gregory boasts about himself, which becomes important for Capulet as the play progresses. The next form of Conflict that takes place is the conflict within Romeo, who wants to leave his love for Rosaline, but cannot. Bid a sick man in sadness make his will: Ah, word ill urged to one that is so ill! In sadness, cousin, I do love a woman. This quote shows that he is fighting his love for Rosaline, as he states In sadness cousin, which means that he regrets it but loves her anyway. The word sad, representing his regret. If it was not for this inner conflict of Romeo, he would never have gone to the party, meaning that he would never have met Juliet. This shows once more, that violence and conflict is a very important part of the play that has a direct affect on the plot. In Act three: Scene one, there are many forms of violence that take place. Firstly, the inner conflict of Mercutio, as he accuses Benvolio of being a hot tempered person, Come, come, thou art as hot a Jack in thy mood as any in Italy, and as soon moved to be moody, and as soon moody to be moved. The word hot can be associated with fire, and anger, depicting that Benvolio is temperamental. However, what we can understand from this is that Mercutio is actually describing himself. While Benvolio mainly tries to avoid a fight, and normally will try to make peace, Mercutio is always supportive of defending his honour. If he was not, then it could never lead to his and Tybalts death. The next form of violence in the play is the use of verbal fighting, in act three scene one, between Tybalt and Mercutio. Consort! What, dost thou make us minstrels?. This quote clearly portrays the aggression that Mercutio is showing toward Tybalt, and he takes his accusations and subverts them. If this fight had not take place, then Mercutio would never have been so aggravated as to have taken Tybalt on in a duel. Furthermore, the next issue to address is the emotional conflict that Romeo faces, which is a reflection of the verbal fighting, when Tybalt calls Romeo a villain and thereby insults his honour, Romeo is faced with an extremely difficult choice. Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee Doth much excuse the appertaining rage? To such a greeting: villain am I none; Therefore farewell; I see thou knowst me not. This quote shows that Romeo is caught in conflict. If he does not answer back to Tybalt, he would be regarded as a coward, and he will bring shame upon his family and his reputation. On the other hand, if he does retaliate, he will kill Juliets cousin, which will anger the Capulets further and fuel the war, thereby putting pressure on his relationship with Juliet. Furthermore in this scene, there is also a large amount of physical violence that takes place. Forbidden bandying in Verona streets: Hold, Tybalt! good Mercutio! TYBALT under ROMEOs arm stabs MERCUTIO, and flies with his followers. If Mercutio had never been stabbed, Romeo would never have been banished for avenging Mercutios death. This point shows that violence and conflict is relevant to the play, and without it, then Romeo would never have been banished by the prince. The final form of conflict in this scene is between Lady Capulet, the Prince and Benvolio. This is mainly verbal conflict, however it leads to the banishment of Romeo. I beg for justice, which thou, prince, must give; Romeo slew Tybalt, Romeo must not live. As Lady Capulet demands that Romeo be killed, the prince is put under a lot of pressure, and eventually manages to come to a compromise. However, without this argument, the Prince would have to let Romeo go, as Romeo only did what the prince had threatened earlier, to kill any Capulet or Montague that quarrelled, and therefore, Romeo had only carried out the punishment. The last scene that will be discussed is act, scene five. It starts with Romeo in Juliets room, where he is spending his last few hours with her. The first form of conflict in this part of the play is Juliets inner conflict. She is wondering whether she made the right choice by marrying Romeo. Indeed, I never shall be satisfied with Romeo, till I behold him-dead-. In this quote she is using a double meaning, portraying to her mother that he is a villain, while secretly meaning, that she will not be satisfied until she holds Romeo in her hands. This quote also foreshadows the ultimate act of violence that is yet to come, their death. Moreover, this also proves that violence is embedded in the plot line, and is also portrayed in the tone of the language. The next and most important conflict in this scene is between Capulet, and Juliet. Here, he is angered by the fact that Juliet refuses to marry Paris, and threatens to hit her, and quite violently pushes her away, while he screams at her. Hang thee, young baggage! disobedient wretch! I tell thee what: get thee to church o Thursday. This quote really express the anger in Capulets voice, as the words baggage and wretch show that he is irritated as he is using an extremely violent tone to . This also illustrates how violent Capulet is, and this is proven by the fact that he talks to his daughter using extremely negative language. If this scene never happened, and Capulet only forced her to marry Paris, and did not use any form of violence, then the play would not portray the amount of emotion that Shakespeare had intended to. The reader would not feel Juliets loss or trauma. Furthermore, if he did not force Juliet to marry Paris, then it would be fairly simple for Juliet to run away wit h Romeo, as the haste of the plan created by Juliet and the Friar, caused the fatal events to unfold, and for Romeo to miss the letter. Ergo, the last scene is where the ultimate act of violence takes place, the death of Romeo and Juliet. Without this scene, then the play would have a completely different ending, and would have been a comedy. For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo, this quote portrays the tragedy that had just happened, especially the word woe, as it is associated with tragedy and sadness. As conflict was the reason that caused the violence in the first place, it was only fitting that violence ended the play, with the death of Juliet. On the other hand, critics may argue that violence and conflict is not at all a major part in the play. This is because Shakespeare intended Romeo and Juliet to be a love story in the first place, and since this is a huge theme and the genre, it could make the violence in the play not very important at all. The violence could also become unimportant, as there are also many other themes within the play, such as, status, power, challenging authority, and the love triangle between Paris, Juliet and Romeo. However, without violence and conflict to create and highlight these factors, Romeo and Juliet would lose all of its originality. In conclusion, I think that violence and conflict is an extremely important part of Romeo and Juliet. If there was no violence and conflict, then the final events would never have unfolded. Violence and conflict are the two things that help the events in the play to link together, for example, if Romeos inner conflict had not made him go to Rosalines party, he never would have angered Tybalt, and Tybalt would never have had a reason to go looking for Romeo, and Mercutio would never have died. The violence and conflict acts as links in the chain of events throughout the play. .Ultimately, without these two factors, Romeo and Juliet would never exist!

Free Essays on The Wife Of Bath Tale

The Wife of Bath’s Reflexive Contradiction for Sexual Equality in the Canterbury Tales The Wife of Bath has been described and depicted as an independent proto-feminist who long ago led the charge for sexual equality. Chaucer’s visionary protagonist was a refreshing and modern look at women’s rights in the fifteenth century. She spends much of her prologue breaking down stereotypical barriers that have confined women of her time to passive and subservient roles in her society. As a result, her prologue, if standing alone, can be noted as one of the great calls for female independence in historical literature. But upon viewing her works as a whole, her section of the General Prologue, her prologue and her tale, it is well noted that she strikingly contradicts her own call for equality with her story of the knight and the hag. She builds her case so strongly and defiantly in her prologue, yet subsequently demolishes her argument in her following tale. By allowing the hag to compromise her position, rewarding the knight for his chauvinist deeds and co untering her own stance with several questionable details, the Wife of Bath contradicts her position for sexual equality and retards the momentum she had built in her preceding works. After the hag has put the knight in a position where she could take advantage and follow the Wife of Bath’s principles, she not only passes up on the chance to treach the knight a lesson, but actually entreats his disturbing persona. To procure their first encounter the hag (and this can be rightly assumed by her mysterious and later magical nature) attracts the knight the only way he could be lured. Smart Answers to 10 Stupid Interview Questions

Smart Answers to 10 Stupid Interview Questions We’ve all been there. You’re in an interview and expecting to be asked intelligent questions so you can show off your excellent preparation. But all of a sudden, you get a question so stupid that it throws you off your pins. Here are a few of the silliest  questions we have heard- and ways to answer them gracefully.1. â€Å"Why do you want this job?†It is possible to have a good answer to this that talks about your passion for the company and the position and the field, but it’s also a pretty stupid way to phrase it- and not particularly nuanced. Get your revenge by quickly explaining your keen interest and then deflecting by ending your answer with another question. Such as: â€Å"I’d really love to hear more about what you’re currently working on here†¦Ã¢â‚¬ 2. â€Å"Tell me a little bit about yourself†Keep your response here short and sweet. Don’t actually talk about your life story. Instead, have an elevator pitch r eady to encapsulate your career story- where you’re coming from and why you’re a perfect fit. Focus on the professional and finish it off painlessly and quickly.3. â€Å"Why should we hire you over all our other applicants?†You can’t compare yourself to the other qualified applicants. You have no idea who they are or what their resumes look like. All you can do with this question is sell yourself. I.e. â€Å"I don’t know about the others, but I can tell you why you should hire me.† And then just pivot to your talents and value.4. â€Å"What should we know that isn’t on your resume?†This is a curveball, and there are a lot of stupid ways to answer it, but it can also be a gift. Here’s your opportunity to explain gaps in employment, or to emphasize skills or experiences that would be relevant to this job but maybe didn’t make the cut on your documents. Frame your answer to show how you’d be great at this job. 5. â€Å"How honest are you?†This one is a real doozy. Who in their right mind would say: â€Å"Not at all; I’m a total liar.†? Get out of this one by giving a short and straightforward statement about your high ethical standards and remind your interviewer about your available references.6. â€Å"Describe yourself in three words.†This is an invitation to put yourself in a box. It won’t be particularly illuminating for either of you. Try to think of qualities that show you off in a particularly good light. And refrain from saying: â€Å"Ask better questions.†7. â€Å"If you were a superhero, what would your superpower be?†The biggest trick here is to not make a face. Come up with something related to your professional strengths, then move on.8. â€Å"What was your salary at your last job?†Most applicants will feel compelled to answer this- and you really don’t have to. Fire it back this way: â€Å"I’m currently l ooking for jobs with an annual salary of around $X. Does that correspond with your salary range?†9. â€Å"What would your former manager say about you?†If they really wanted to know, they could call and ask for a reference. Also, your former manager might not be someone worth asking! The answer here depends entirely on the kind of person/employer your former boss was. Ignore the inanity of the question and say something positive and truthful.10. â€Å"How badly do you want this job?†Ugh. Answer honestly and you might sound desperate. Play it cool, and you might sound indifferent. Try to keep it in the middle. Say how confident you are that you would be an asset there, and then voice your enthusiasm and passion for the company or position and reassert your eagerness to move forward in their hiring process.

Ravi Desai has been in the position of assistant managing director of Southeast Asian markets for production and sales only. Managing the functions singularly of all departments might be challenging for him. Tom Wallace has experience of only technical and sales portfolios of TCT, which might be challenging in taking the overall in charge of the Indian division because of little experience in other areas. Nature and Society in The Dharma Bums and Goodbye, Columbus :: Dharma Bums Essays

Nature and Society in The Dharma Bums and Goodbye, Columbus      Ã‚  Ã‚   From its beginning, the literature of the 1960s valued man having a close relationship with nature. Jack Kerouac shows us the ideal form of this relationship in the story of Han Shan, the Chinese poet. At first, these concerns appear to have little relevance to Goodbye, Columbus by Philip Roth. However, by mentioning Gauguin, Roth gives us a view of man's ideal relationship to nature very similar to the one seen in the story of Han Shan. The stories of Han Shan and Gauguin offer an interesting commentary Neil and Brenda's relationship, as well as insight into its collapse.    From the beginning, 60s literature advocated that man have a close relationship with nature. This is easily seen in Kerouac's The Dharma Bums. In this book, he repeatedly invokes the names of older writers concerned with living a life in harmony with nature. By mentioning such writers as Muir, Thoreau, and Whitman, Kerouac makes a statement about man and nature. The behavior of the characters in the book is in keeping with this environmentalist message. The high points of the book are characterized by a nearness to nature. A good example of this is when Ray and Japhy climb the Matterhorn. The fact that Kerouac peoples his book with characters inspired by people important to the Sixties, such as Gary Snyder and Allen Ginsburg, helps tie these environmental concerns to the decade as a whole.    The most direct example of what Kerouac feels is the ideal relation between man and nature is the story of Han Shan. We are told that Shan is Japhy's hero because he "was a man of solitude who could take off by himself and live purely and true to himself"(Kerouac, The Dharma Bums, 22). By escaping society and living close to nature, he was able to live his life the way the was supposed to. If he had remained in a society in conflict with nature, he would have been twisted and distorted, unable to obtain his true shape. Both Ray and Japhy see reflections of Han Shan in each other.    At first glance, there seems to be little in common between these environmental concerns and Goodbye, Columbus. Critical analysis of Song of Solomon Essay

‘Song of Solomon’, Toni Morrison’s third Novel was published in 1977 and it ascertained her as a key American author given that, after its publication, it turned out to be a bestseller and drew honor from critics as well as readers. The narrative has been particularly admired for the exquisiteness of its language as well as its foundation of international themes in the distinctiveness of the experience of the African-American, not to forget its utilization of folklore. (Morrison 34) The narrative is based on an African-American fairy tale concerning slaves who are able to fly back to Africa once they decide. The author fictionalizes this fairy tale through the traits of Solomon who is the great-grandfather of the story’s central character, Milkman Dead. Through Milkman’s discovery of Solomon’s story and his capability to fly, he learns to be proud of his ancestry as well as valuing his connections to community and family unit. The book won the National Book critics Circle Award for fiction in the year 1977 and is currently extensively taught and emerged once more on best-seller lists after Oprah Winfrey chose it so that it could be included in her book club. The book has being loved by readers for a period of more than two decades and it is still deemed one of Toni Morrison’s most excellent books. What touched me most after reading Toni Morrison’s book are the biblical references: (Morrison 51& 52) The author keeps making biblical references from both the Old Testament as well as the New Testament which are quite useful in bringing out the overall themes, characters as well as in building up the plot of the novel. To start with, the author gives her book the title ‘Song of Solomon’ which is a reference taken from the Old Testament’s ‘Song of Solomon’ or rather Song of Songs, or Canticles which is basically on love and relationships and is interpreted in some customs as a figurative demonstration of the relationship of Israel and God as wife and husband where the principal characters of the song are a man and a woman and the rhyme offers progress commencing courtship to consummation. In Morrison’s narrative, Solomon, Milkman dead’s great-grandfather finds out the tale of Solomon and his capability to fly which makes him to be delighted of his heritage and to value links to family and community. (Furman & Morrison 142) Song of Solomon commences with Robert Smith’s flight from the roof of Mercy hospital. Smith emerges on the top of the hospital with two handcrafted arms on his backside and jumps from the top of the hospital to the shock and amazement of many. Because of him making an attempt to fly, Ruth Foster dead is able to give birth inside the hospice instead of on its stepladder given that during this moment in time, Negro women are not permitted to deliver in the hospital because of segregation which makes Macon Dead turn out to be the first Negro infant to be delivered in Mercy Hospital. (Furman & Morrison 198) Morrison makes biblical inferences in naming his characters which helps in bringing out their personalities. Corinthian’s Dead, Milkman and Lena’s father is called Macon Dead and is the proprietor of apartments and houses. Dead thinks owning property enables one to own oneself, as well as others too. Together with Pilate, Macon grew up in Lincoln’s Heaven, a farm in Pennsylvania. At the age of sixteen, he watches his father murdered by whites who desire the family’s land. Macon and Pilate are sheltered by Circle, a maid and midwife who houses them in vacant quarters of the Butler house. They then escape from the Butler place and hide in a cave for the night where they meet a white man whom Macon kills. (Furman & Morrison 231) Macon â€Å"Milkman† dead III’s mother breastfeeds him for far too long until he is so tall and his feet are â€Å"touching the floor† which makes him swiftly gain the reputation for being a â€Å"mummy’s boy† which is a direct contrast to Guitar, his best friend. Milkman has two sisters, â€Å"Magdalene named Lena† and â€Å"First Corinthians†. The daughters of the family unit are given names by placing a pin inside the bible while the males are called after their father. Macon Dead’s name was the outcome of an administrative fault when Milkman’s grandfather had to list following the end of slavery. (Morrison 121) Pilate, Macon Dead Jr. ’s sister, is identified as fostering an Earth Mother type of personality. Given that he was born lacking a navel, she is rather a mystic character and it is mightily implied that she is Divine i. e. she is a female Christ and that her name is ironical. Macon has not had a word to his sister for years and did not feel greatly of her. She, just like Macon, has had to fend for herself starting from an early age, although she has to deal with her history in a different manner. Reba is her one and only daughter. She also has one granddaughter by the name Hagar who is very much in love with Milkman, and is not able to deal with rejection. Milkman’s erstwhile best friend, Guitar, attempts to murder him after he mistakenly believes Milkman of deceiving him out of concealed gold. Toni Morrison’s narrative comes to an end on a touching and uncertain note after Milkman finally discovers to fly after deciding to confront Guitar. (Furman & Morrison 265) In conclusion, it can be said that Toni Morrison makes use of biblical references in his narrative from time to time. Essay on Nazi Book Burning - 858 Words

Nearly a century before World War II, German Jewish poet Heinrich Heine wrote, â€Å"Where they burn books, they will also ultimately burn people (â€Å"Holocaust History†). These chilling words not only forecasted the events to come, but also went up in flames in Germany during the Nazi book burning. Throughout Germany on May 10, 1933, thousands of people came out to witness these horrid events. These public displays of censorship were monstrous in nature. He was trying to lift the American spirits in spite of the horrific events in Europe . In Germany, the mood was much more cheerful, as they were accompanied by singing of â€Å"Nazi songs and anthems† (The History Place). The leader of propaganda and book burning for the Nazi party, Joseph Goebbels, proclaimed â€Å"The flames not only illuminate the end of the old era, they also light up the new.† (Foxman) Unlike the rest of the world, the Nazi party viewed the book burning as a positive event and as a beginning, not an end. Not only did the Nazis try to censor literature, they also tried to eliminate foreign ideas by limiting types of art and communication. The Nazis â€Å"judged most of modern art degenerate† and tried to expel it from the country (Foxman). They also tried to limit all communication, which was limited already to â€Å"books, newspapers, periodicals, radio, and the moving pictures† because of the time period (Foxman). Any communication had to be deemed German before it could be permitted. So many movies were banned that films were almost nonexisten t except for Nazi propaganda. The Nazi’s attempt was to limit all communication from other countries, so that only their ideas would be accepted, which is the same rationale as the book burnings. The book burnings and the censorship in Germany relate directly to Ayn Rand’s works.
